Moves

Snoop

When you keep an eye out for trouble, roll with Mind. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 1. While you’re there, spend your hold to ask the MC questions, 1 for 1:
  • What’s my best way in/out?
  • Who or what here is not what they seem?
  • What happened here recently?
  • What here is the greatest danger to me?
  • Whose turf is this?
On a miss, you find yourself in over your head. The MC will tell you why this is a bad spot.

Did your homework

When you Put a Face to a Name with someone politically important (your call), roll with Mind instead of Faction. On a hit, you know a dangerous secret about them or their political machinations. On a 10+, you know how to leverage that information; take a Debt on them as well. On a miss, your snooping has already landed you in hot water with your target; they know you’ve been looking into their business.

I know a guy

When you Hit the Streets or Put a Face to a Name with Mortality, roll with Mind instead of Faction.

Dredge up secrets from the bowels of the city

First, name a domain of the city where you want to dredge up a secret.  A domain is broad.  It has to be cross functional, or cross faction, or cross departmental.  You have special talents at the intersections, and the places between the cracks of the city.

If you have sufficient time and access to the city government’s network of people, technology, databases, and files you will be able to interrogate the information you gather and the gaps in the information will reveal secrets that have been concealed in that domain.

Roll, on Spirit:
On a hit, you dredge up a secret and nobody knows you know
On a 7-9, you learn something secret, but there are consequences, trade-offs or you put yourself at risk
On a miss, you believe you’ve dredged up a secret, but you couldn’t be more wrong and now you’re losing touch with reality.  I’ll tell you what you now believe, and you will believe it until somebody proves it to be otherwise.  Mark corruption

Irresistible

When you Persuade an NPC using promises or seduction, treat a 7-9 as a 10+ result. On a miss, your machinations succeed as though you rolled a 7-9, but attract the attention of a rival or enemy.
This move is from If You Can't Beat 'Em: Claudia takes corruption when she uses it.

Words Are Wind

When someone breaks a promise to you or lies to you and you find out, they owe you a Debt and you take +1 forward against them.
This move is from If You Can't Beat 'Em: Claudia takes corruption when she uses it.
Promises: Welgesteld promised not to hurt us.

Questions

Who are you: Claudia Horst is 36.  She lives alone, with her two cats: Tetsuo and Binky.

How long have you been in the city: Claudia moved to Amsterdam when her father came here to work in a startup in the 90's.

How did you learn about the supernatural: She works in the permitting and regulatory department of the Amsterdam city government, where a large part of her job is making sure the city follows the delicate legal, preservation, and regulatory requirements for buildings before they are torn down to make way for real estate development projects.  Claudia has recently become aware that dark supernatural forces are using the city’s Power of eminent domain to target rival clans, disrupt operations of rival factions, and try to reshape the city into a twisted gateway for dark forces.  Claudia’s superiors appear totally ignorant of this conspiracy but it’s possible they are in the take, or worse, part of the conspiracy.  Claudia fears she may be going insane, and has started seeing a therapist/yoga instructor to talk about her compulsion to discover a plot that might be better left alone.

Why is this city worth saving: Claudia loves the city.  She only feels alive here.

What mystery are you currently looking into: Why is BZBB Development Ltd trying to buy up all the waterfront and canal-front property across the IJ from Centraal Station? And why does the trail keep leading back to the same mysterious series of acquisitions around the Joods Historical Museum in 1972? And how have the owners of those abandoned tenements been able to stave off eminent domain and avoid being served by the city inspectors?  Speaking of the city inspectors, why are so many of them reluctant to work the night shift? Why are the handful that work the night shift never seen in the office in the daytime?

Debts

» Claudia covered for Jan's shoddy paperwork, so as not to help BZBB. Jan owes you 2 Debts.

quote:
Whoever does Jan's permitting at city hall (who is that Jan?) brought in some paperwork  proving the validity of his title for the Tot Zover.  This was to support his application  for historical preservation protection in a bid to ward off the eminent domain grab by BBZB development.  While it was a highly skilled forgery, Claudia didn't think it smelled right and snooped out that Jan had transferred the property from one of his old personas to his latest pseudonym.  She thinks the old persona was Jan's father, since he's too young for it to be him.  She held up the application, and when Jan finally called to find out what was happening, she confronted him about the forgery and he admitted that the document was a fake, but that his ownership of the property was real because he was the only heir of the persona.  Claudia was damned if she was going to make it easier for BZBB to buy up the whole block and she decided to ignore the forgery and approve the application.  Jan totally owes her.

» Terry tried to fortify (from his perspective: vampire-proof) Claudia's place, though it didn't seem to help Ayesha. Claudia owes Terry a Debt.

Then Terry saved Claudia's ass in session 3: Claudia owes him another Debt.

quote:
Before Claudia moved in with Ayesha (and before she disappeared), Terry came by their apartment and installed deadbolts, security, etcetera (as well as, covertly, all the traditional anti-vampiric apartment appliances: garlic growing in the window planters;  doors and window frames made of hawthorne; a humidifier stocked with holy water; handcrafted silver mirrors which are supposed to crack if vampires see their reflections in them).  None of these housewarming gifts  appear to have made any difference at all in protecting Ayesha, but Terry still lets himself into the apartment when Claudia isn't around to refill the holy water and check the mirrors... just in case the vamps target Ayesha's roommate for some reason. Claudia is humoring him, and Terry from the knowledge that his daughter was gay.  She knows Ayesha was wanting to tell him and is hopeful that one day she'll get a chance.  She also shared, very transparently everything she knew about Ayesha's disappearance.

They're fond of each other, and they owe each other a debt.

» Hasan healed Claudia from her wounds. She owes him a Debt.
He also defended her by attacking, and bedlamming, Mr. W. Claudia owes him a Debt for that as well.
Claudia also owes Hasan a debt for zapping Elsje's car.

Elsje warned me of the cops crookedness, at great risk to herself.I owe her a Debt.

Plimpton DeVeers aka Plikplok, the chief of staff of Stijn Van den Graven at the eco dept, got my Vespa an inspections exception. I owe him a Debt.

Estie owes me a Debt for saving her from rabid cats.

Cleared Debts

Claudia is protecting him from the knowledge that she was romantically involved with Ayesha. Terry owes Claudia a Debt.
Sarese Peasebottom, safety inspector, disappears often during the day; I didn't turn her in. She owes me a Debt. Leveraged this to persuade her to let me investigate her boss.

» Claudia lied to the police and led them away from the psychic eye . Soraya owes her a debt.

» Claudia is covering up the Psychic Eye's code violations and pressuring Soraya to let her do supernatural research and stalking Estie. You owe Soraya a debt.

quote:
The psychic eye is not built to code, at all.  It's a fire trap; and the spiral staircases that connect the levels are too steep and have no railings;  Its infested with vermin... rats and bats and snakes which evade even the toughest extermination attempts.  Somebody (Soraya's sisters?) reported them to the city and Claudia was preparing to shut them down when she learned the Estie was a regular customer there.  Instead of shutting them down she visited the store, spoke to Soraya who, feeling threatened with the shutdown or exposure of her sanctum, (and of having to move Ima!) agreed to show Claudia the books and texts and artifacts that Estie had bought and sold there.  Claudia fell down the rabbit hole of supernatural research, feeding her paranoid feelings and demanding more and more research from Soraya to support her fears.  Soraya resents the intrusion, but can't afford to address the code violations.  Claudia lives in fear that Soraya will reveal to Estie her unhealthy fascination and borderline stalking behavior and owes her a debt for not telling.

» Hasan is keeping Claudia's involvement in the case hidden from both his law firm and BZBB development. Hasan thinks having a mortal involved will complicate things and doesn't want to tip his hand that he knows more than he's saying about BZBB. Claudia owes him a Debt.
