The M16A1 is a U.S.-made bounding anti-personnel mine, based on captured plans of the WWII German S-mine. It consists of a cast iron body in a thin steel sleeve, with a central fuse well fitted with a pronged pressure and tilt fuse.

Sufficient pressure on the fuse will trigger the mine, firing the inner iron body of the mine up into the air before a pyrotechnic delay detonates the main charge, spraying high-velocity steel fragments in a Small Burst Template around the point of detonation, typically at around face height.

Only full overhead cover offers an Armor bonus against the M16A1. Simply being prone offers no protection.
