This campaign will differ from the stories in the typical fantasy narrative in that we should not always root unreservedly for the characters to succeed. Lacking alignment our protagonists should run the gamut of human flaws including being selfish or overconfident. They may get the comeuppance of these foibles, as often as they happen to thwart thier enemies... or humiliate a villainous NPC.   Unlike other games, a character in this campaign will not be rewarded only for succeeding in his chosen goals.  Instead, a character may be rewarded for making the game entertaining.  And for periodically reminding other players the type of dialogue to which they should aspire.

Adventures in this campaign will be ones of Intrigues and Dramatic dialogue, Problem-solving, and Social dynamics, of Self-introspection, and aligning your agenda with allies or prestige organizations.  In THIS campaign, if you find yourself in a fight you might lose, then something has probably gone horribly wrong.  Though standard Dnd games thrive only combat. And while it is far better to gain the upper hand through verbal verve, cunning, wit, and treachery. Sometimes combat is unavoidable. Though PLAYERS should generally avoid violence as combat is lethal ... and I'll pull no punches for characters who find they are unlucky in dice.

Character will inevitably suffer reverses. Try to enjoy it. In most roleplaying games you want your character to succeed all the time. But here your PC’s goals and actions may not always be admirable, and even if they are, indifferent fate may trip him up anyway. That’s just the way the good stories work. Sometimes the hero will lose.  Be it by failing an opposed check, or succumbs to personal temptation, or get hoodwinked into the most dismal and ridiculous predicaments. Look at these as opportunities to develop character, or to entertain via the character's story...  even in failure.  Remember, your character’s improvement doesn’t depend on money, success, or even maintaining his dignity; improvement depends on your creativity in the path of the story.
