The Watchers ensure that the passage of years and seasons proceed in an orderly and predictable fashion that is easily read by watching the movements of celestial bodies. As a result, while the names and counting of years varies, the calendar itself has the same arrangement throughout the known world.

• Each day and the preceding night are exactly 24 hours long. Days end when the sun sets.
  
• Each month has exactly four seven day weeks, totally 28 days. Months end when the moon is fully dark.
  
• Each year has exactly 13 months, totaling 364 days or 52 weeks.
  
• Each season has exactly 91 days. The position of the sun at noon relative to a planetary ring (which is visible in the sky both day and night) easily indicates which season it is.
