- Cantrips tend to be rhymes or snippets of song, sung or muttered prior to other endeavours and are only castable by Companions, including the Thane and Skald. Each applies only to a specific Action or set of Actions, augmenting or twisting the result, and multiple cantrips may be stacked together. All cantrips are cast prior to resolution of the primary Action
- Chants represent much more extended songs or sagas, recited or sung whilst an Action is being attempted and may be learned by anyone. Again they apply to specific Actions or sets of Actions, however they cannot be stacked other than by individual Companions or sets of Followers in the endeavour reciting their own Chant. If multiple Chants are combined in this manner there is a chance for resonance or dissonance to occur
- Runes tend to be carved onto equipment or runestones and may be temporary or permanent in nature, the former consuming the runestone. They can be used only a reduced set of Actions, typically involving Scouting, Crafting or Building - but can be created by suitable equipped and trained crafts-folk. Some temporary rune-stones may be used in a fashion similar to cantrips
- Visions may be sought by Companions through consumption of specific herbs and fungi, through privation or with the help of specific types of facilities. They may be sought or may be visited on one unexpectedly, often providing insight into the world around one or the task at hand. Seeking a vision is an action in and of itself, where as the flashes of insight occur following resolution of an Action
- Dreams can rarely be sought, other than in a handful of places where the fabric between worlds is thin. Where one is touched by the Gods a Dream can often follow, however. Dreams occur outside the usual framework of Actions, however seeking one may consume an Action as with Visions
Other types of magic exist in rumour and tale and myth: tapping the flows of the earth, calling on the elements or the beasts of the wilds, clockwork and steamcrafting and so on
