The Good Samaritan was a TL-1800 light freighter owned by Vols Karn that attempted to bring several unconscious freighter crews to the planet Barsol. There, it was disabled in-flight by the planet's violent electrical storms and, after its pilots Kreeva and Orn (and, seperately, hired medic Edon Stamms) evacuated in escape pods, crashed down the side of a mountain.
When the vessel came to rest in a mountain river and hanging off the side of a cliff, the captive crew of the Neutrino Sledge were able to escape the wreck before it plunged off the end of the waterfall and exploded somewhere below in the world's mist layer.
Joad, the reclusive 'mountain man' of Barsol, heard the explosion, but didn't see it.
