Personality and Mannerisms People unacquainted with Yuuno commonly find her cold, disinterested, morbid or aloof. In fact she is quite sharp, if distracted. And those who come to know her find through different or strange views of things, she is actually passionate, sympathetic and emotive. She is also refreshingly matter-of-fact. It just does not come through in the typical ways. Her smiles are fabled, but do actually exist. Weak and brief, they are no less genuine. Privately, very privately, she might be moved to quiet tears. She is fond of friendly competition, with Shogi being her choice of games. She frequently mumbles while speaking and uses the barbarisms of the lower classes. She will not allow the former to keep her from being heard, and the latter is because she is not shy of using lower forms of speech. They are not even all that familiar to her now; it is more a matter of spite. Namikaze no Kami Director of Wind and Waves. Yuuno's official position in the Mantis clan rolls. The title places her amongst the elder court shugenja and it is much higher than any lowborn could hope to rise. It affords her a few privileges, namely a small stipend, a small estate and access to clan resources. The latter most is useful when she feels like engaging in some open water or coastal commercial ventures. The activity, while publicly rebuked, is common enough in the Mantis clan, and in Yuuno's case it is an escape from boredom. Though she does it rarely, it can get her into trouble easily, since a shugenja's participating in that sort of action is suspicious enough, but she is particularly visible. In his long old age, he spent most of his days in private and sedate pursuits, including gardening, reading and fish rearing. Yuuno remembers attending his funeral well, but better the punishment King Enma deigned to give his soul. (Note: no record of his marriage; referencing with Yuuno's birthday shows she was eight when he passed; clearly she was adopted.) It encompasses all aspects of her primary duties in war, which is mostly sinking all the ships and drowning every man aboard them before they reach the Islands of Spice and Silk. She technically operates outside of the Storms, but come the time she will work with the one she chooses (or is told to choose). She is well equipped for the task. Exactly how well is something of a clan secret. As long as she leaves herself prepared to serve her purpose, she is given a fair amount of leeway in her daily life. She is not expected to teach the underlings or serve at the head of religious functions. Her peers seem satisfied she is prepared and willing. She uses this leeway for her private pursuits, which often focus on the lower classes. Amongst the peasantry and even eta or anyone who can be driven to tolerate her unusual countenance and manner Yuuno is regarded as a physician whom can be called upon to help no matter the compensation or distance; for she has been known to travel across the islands to help the sick or injured. |
