A Brief Overview of the Solar System

Since the Solar Exploration Program was put into place in 2070, mankind has set up a few colonies within our own Solar system. It takes three months for the fastest ships to reach the furthest colony on Titan, so the colonies remain fairly isolated from one another.

Earth

The birthplace of humanity. Earth is now a highly industrialised world - although there are extensive projects to reclaim some of the original natural beauty that the planet once had. Environmental pollution, global warming and war have almost destroyed the planet's ecosystem. Weather patterns are harsh and unpredictable and large areas of the planet are uninhabitable.

Genetically modified plants and animals have been introduced into the wild to re-address the ecological balance. There are some protected "Green Zones" under development on the planet, where human intervention is severely restricted, and the ecosystems are closely monitored.

With the termination of the deep sea exploration project in 2090, vast areas of the oceans are now off-limits. Small aquaculture projects are taking place near the shorelines of the major continents, however.

The Moon

Colonization of the moon begain in 2090. The first city to be established was called Lunar Haven, and this forms the seat of the satellite's governing body, The Lunar Federation (LF).

Lunar Haven retains close ties with Earth, mainly due to its close proximity. The planet is purely industrial and many spaceships are built here. There are also some mining operations dotted about the surface.

There is an area roughly 2,000 kilometers square on the dark side of the moon that has been nicknamed The Darklands. The LF has marked the area as off limits. An attempt was made to set up a mining station in this area a few years ago. The Station was destroyed and the handful of survivours who returned have now been institutionalised. Unofficial reports talk of an encounter with "Great greyish toad-like monsters", but since no-one is allowed into the Darklands, the reports are probably no more than a form of urban myth.

Mars

The Terraforming of Mars began in 2112, and is now a thriving colony. The Atmosphere of Mars is now breathable, equivalent to living in the upper areas of the Himalayas, and the planet has a large number of farms, growing genetically modified food crops.

Mars actually remains the property of Kenchiku Ltd. It trades with other planets, since Mars is the largest producer of food in the solar system. Their headquarters are situated in the city of Hinan Sho in Cydonia.

There are large areas of Mars that are unexplored. However, archaeologists have found remains of buildings that are hundreds of thousands of years old, belonging to a sentient species that seems to have died out long before the first men walked the Earth. Several archealogical research projects have now been set up and we are only just beginning to explore these ancient structures.

The Asteroid Belt

Situated between Mars and Jupiter, this rather hard to navigate area is abundant in mineral rich asteroids. Small independant mining communities have developed, building homes around the smaller asteroids. There are rumours of encounters between these mining stations and a species of small grey humanoid beings in strange circluar craft. Many believe this just to be a regurgitation of the U.F.O and "The Greys" myths that began to die out in the mid to late 21st centuary.

Titan

Orbiting the vast gas giant Jupiter, Titan is home to explorers and scientists alike. The colony has been turned into a vast scientfic laboratory. Access to Titan colony is tightly controlled, and much of the research that goes on there is classified. Disturbingly, rumours have leaked of transport vessels returning from Titan on a yearly basis with cargo bays full of personnel needing psychicatric treatment.
