Kavan

Kavan owns a robust physique and takes some care to keep it that way. Idle enough in humour and still enough on the job, the better part of his own time is spent in exercise and practice. Despite his profession as a 'freelance violence thwartation specialist' he wears no armour and carries no weapons. The only protection he wears other than that offered by his coat, trousers and boots, are firm wrappings on his fists and arms and a wide leather belt.

Calling himself a student of life, Kavan has been under formal tutelage less times than he can count on one hand. His study of unarmed combat then has distilled from observation and more masters than could claim to know him for their student. As a result he seems always to know exactly where he is and how much room he has, able to traverse most spaces without touching anyone. Similarly though he is quick to extract himself from conversations which threaten intimacy, however quick he may be to buy or accept drinks from a stranger.

1. Nothing in the Wind
Sepehr Skycutter disappears in Joakalavi and with him the hopes of Princess Irsabanu. While her agents and the servants of her enemy Prince Ahriman scour the city for Skycutter and his sacred charge, a young street thief finds himself in possession of a peculiar lock box with no lock or key. The Ark of Spring makes Kavan the unwitting prey of Prince and Princess, his identity and motives unknown to either faction.

The hunt rises into a frenzy of street fights, abductions, and back-alley murders. Kavan evades them all, the last with some timely help from Arhus Lokken, enforcer-for-hire and sometimes drinking companion of Kavan. Ultimately Kavan realises he must learn the secrets of the Ark before they get him killed.

At last Kavan is confronted by the savage Ang, standing over the slaughtered nest of pickpockets and rag-pickers that Kavan calls home. When all seems lost, Skycutter is called by Ang’s laughter and drives the killer off, finally able to resume his mission to secure the Ark for his mistress.
2. The Autumn Eye
Prince Ahriman has set his sights on the Autumn Eye and he can think of no better tools to use in its recovery than the agents of his enemy Princess Irsabanu. Kavan wakes in the sunken pyramid of Ao. The way out is over the dead bodies of everyone else inside. Only by completing the ring of seven runes, which Ao’s curse burns on his skin with the death of another captive, can the final chamber be unlocked.

Shera, bride of Skycutter, and Kavan defeat Ang. Before the silence turns deadly Skycutter turns his Sword of Gales to the cutting of stone and shears the labyrinth. When Shera crosses the threshold, Ao’s curse stops her heart. Kavan steals the Eye and flees.

Freed from imprisonment and imbued with the powers of fire and entropy, the Autumn Eye awakens. It grants Kavan supernatural resilience, but all things have a price and the blessings of the Eye put a strain on Kavan’s mind and soul as he journeys to return the Eye from whence it came: the undying remains of Athan. Restored to its place, the humours of the Eye are balanced within the immortal warrior when it rises from its grave. Confident neither Ahriman nor Irsabanu can now reclaim the Eye, Kavan leaves Athan to resume its ancient purpose.
3. Riptide
On the shores of Lake Anytos, Kavan takes his time recovering from the effects of the Autumn Eye. While there he becomes the reluctant champion of the pearl diver Kaou. At first this requires him to eat lunch with her on the beach, but things quickly become more complicated when it transpires Kaou is not human, but a native of the sea.

Bad storms and a curse on Eschi push Kaou’s people to prey on the town. Her hope to restore peace lies in repairing an Imperium machine in the ruins of Marinicoleggi. Between Marinicoleggi and Kaou is an angry town, a swarm of half-mad mermen, and whatever creatures now occupy the abandoned fort.

In the depths of the fort a cult of aguamancers manipulate the machine to hold Traevar hostage, provoking the denizens of the ocean to attack the Dark Spire. To defeat them Kavan must use every advantage he can scavenge, including calling upon the vestiges of the Eye’s gifts and the brutal arts of Ang.

Kavan and Kaou are guided through a deep catacomb of Ancient Ice by a powerful Northern Barbarian named Drace. In the midst of a fierce struggle, Kaou sabotages the machine, rendering it useless, and floods Marinicoleggi in the process. Neither can prevent Mako escaping the tunnels into the desert with the few Imperium secrets he can carry.
