The Story So Far
Ages ago, the cities of men and dwarves were on the brink of destruction, beset by orcs from the west and dragons from the north. Three elven mages, all sisters, came from Antares, the city of the elves, and with their magic and the combined forces of elves and men, the orcs were driven back and the dragons slain.

Returning to Antares, each of the three sisters raised a tower for themselves with the help of the grateful human lords. But as time passed, without the threat of the dragons and orcs, the short-lived human lords began squabbling. The sisters, observing how the people living under these lords suffered, each established an organization to serve the humans, elven, and dwarven people.

The first sister, wishing to protect by force, founded the Hands of Antares, a disciplined, trained fighting force that answers to no authority but the sisters. They protect farmlands and villages, ensure that townsfolk can escape a seige, and hunt down bandits.

The second sister, wishing that history should not be forgotten, established the Eyes of Antares. The Eyes function as historians and legal witnesses; no contract of importance will be signed without an Eye present to witness. Rumors whisper that the Eyes are also the sisters' spies.

The third sister, more reclusive and bookish than the others, gathered her followers to found the Thoughts of Antares. These scholars split into two groups: the itinerant teachers and the keepers of writing. They double as keepers of messenger birds: it is rare to find even a minor holdfast without a resident Thought.

After their organizations were firmly established, the sisters appointed new leaders for each and took ship to the East, never to return.

This is the history everyone learns. Ages have passed in relative peace. Our story begins in a small river town called Helmdot south of the dwarven fortress Felgard.
