Dalhurst, Capital of Gladve

The Duke lives in a rather nice castle at the center of the city, slightly towards the north side. It is surrounded by a moat, with a drawbridge and whatnot. Immediately in front of it is a sizable plaza that marks the junction of several main roads: one street leads east to the First Cathedral of Anarus, another leads south to the main gate, and a third street leads west to the riverfront district. The majority of the three main streets are covered in markets on any given day, hence their common names Market Street East/South/West.

The city was originally constructed at a bend in a major river, but after some years a canal was constructed to carry some water through the city. (If the city is on a clock face, imagine the canal runs from the 8 o'clock position to 11.) A majority of the city is contained in another wall, though more of a basic defense structure than the towering defenses that the castle has. Just outside the city's southern main gate is a small fishing village situated directly on the river. There are two other, smaller gates that exit the city around the 4 and 1 o'clock positions, but they lead to farmland and a forest, respectively.

The city is not officially divided, but five general districts have formed over the city's history. The first is the High District, located north of Market Street West and stretching around to approximately north of the castle. This area is where most of the nobles under Sir Gregory reside. They have a rather lavish lifestyle, and often enjoy parties and the like.

To the east of the High District, wrapping around Dalhurst to East Market Street, is what is commonly called the Decent District. Though the name seems uninspired, it is generally agreed to be the most apt description of the area. The people are generally content and lead good lives. The district is also notable for its several schools.

To the south, between East and South Market Streets, is the district with no agreed-upon name, though most city dwellers will know it as The Scorch. When the city was originally constructed, it was a hot-spot of magical activity and learning. However, 80-some years ago, an accident at the Old Academy lead to an explosion that rocked the city. Since then, the district has fallen into serious disrepair, now resembling a slum.

Between West and South Market streets lies the Market District (which often confuses newcomers, considering there is a Market street not adjacent to the Market District). Located between the main exit to the city and the canal, most traders and craftsmen have elected to set up shop here for ease of transport. This is the district most commonly visited by those that live elsewhere. While more exotic merchants often set up on any of the Market Streets, items more necessary to life are found within the district.

The final district, the River District, is the small portion of Dalhurst that is located on the opposite side of the canal, but still within the city walls. Due to its relative isolation, most magic enthusiasts and schools are located here. In addition, the Military Academy, the training grounds, and the barracks for the militia are located here. These are the forces commanded into battle directly by Sir Gregory. Distinct from the militia is the city watch, which has posts all throughout Dalhurst. Their headquarters are also located in the River District, but they have something of a rivalry with the militia.
